Hand held refractometers overview

Hand held refractometers

The use of a hand refractometer facilitates convenient and rapid measurement of concentration in a number of liquid and semi-solid samples.

Food applications include the measurement of sugar in grape must and other fresh fruit, processed food, sugar solutions and beverages. Starch, honey and salt solutions may also be measured.

Hand held refractometers are also commonly used to control blend ratios of various industrial liquids. Chemical blends such as glycols, battery acid, heat exchange fluids, automotive antifreeze, aviation ‘wing de-icers’ and aviation fuel ‘ice inhibitors’ can be controlled easy whilst measurement of industrial fluids such as coolants, quenchants and hydraulic oils are commonplace.

Eclipse Refractometers

Eclipse Range

The Eclipse range of optical refractometer offers high quality at an affordable price. The instruments are manufactured in the United Kingdom and are sealed to an ingress protection of IP65. The instruments are of ergonomic design, making use in wet and cold environments easy. Low Volume Eclipse refractometers, unique to B+S, are equipped with a specially designed sample presser to optimize the spreading of sample droplets and ensure the sharpest possible borderline. These instruments are popular with botanists and entomologists for the study of nectars and pollination where sample volumes of 1 microlitre are available.

DR Digital Refractometer
DR Digital

DR digital hand refractometers offer accurate results, especially if a number of different operators are to use the equipment as no optical alignment is necessary. All that is required is to place the sample on the prism and press the read button – the instrument takes care of the rest. Temperature corrected results* are displayed on the liquid crystal display (LCD) in two seconds.
